Twitter Information

Think Globally, Tweet Locally

In August we announced that we were working on a new API that would provide developers with the ability to geotag tweets. Today, the Geotagging API is officially available.

This release is unique in that it's API-only which means you won't see any changes on twitter.com, yet. Instead, Twitter applications likeBirdfeedSeesmic WebFoursquareGowallaTwidroidTwittelator Proand others are already supporting this new functionality (go try them out now!) in interesting ways that include geotagging your tweets and displaying the location from where a tweet was posted. The added information provides valuable context when reading your friends tweets and allows you to better focus in on local conversations. Now you can find out what live music is playing right now in your neighborhood or what people visiting Checkpoint Charlie are saying today about the anniversary of the Berlin Wall. These are only the beginning and we are really looking forward to seeing the creative uses emerge from the developer community.

It's important to note geotagging is disabled by default for all users which means you will need to opt-in in order to use it. To activate the new geotagging functionality, go to your Settings page and click "Enable Geotagging".

Refreshed Privacy Policy

As part of rolling out geotagging today we've updated our privacy policyto explicitly include geotagging and to describe the public nature of most of what people post to Twitter. We've tried to keep it short and sweet with lots of real life examples so it's simple to read through. We'll also be letting people know about the new policy via email and@twitter.
Please give the new policy a read and contact us atprivacy@twitter.com if you have comments or suggestions.

What's Happening?

Twitter was originally conceived as a mobile status update service—an easy way to keep in touch with people in your life by sending and receiving short, frequent answers to one question, "What are you doing?" However, when we implemented the service, we chose to leave something out. To stay simple, Twitter did not require individuals to confirm relationships. Instead, we left things open.

People, organizations, and businesses quickly began leveraging the open nature of the network to share anything they wanted, completely ignoring the original question, seemingly on a quest to both ask and answer a different, more immediate question, "What's happening?" A simple text input field limited to 140 characters of text was all it took for creativity and ingenuity to thrive.

Sure, someone in San Francisco may be answering "What are you doing?" with "Enjoying an excellent cup of coffee," at this very moment. However, a birds-eye view of Twitter reveals that it's not exclusively about these personal musings. Between those cups of coffee, people are witnessing accidents, organizing events, sharing links, breaking news, reporting stuff their dad says, and so much more.

The fundamentally open model of Twitter created a new kind of information network and it has long outgrown the concept of personal status updates. Twitter helps you share and discover what's happening now among all the things, people, and events you care about. "What are you doing?" isn't the right question anymore—starting today, we've shortened it by two characters. Twitter now asks, "What's happening?"

We don't expect this to change how anyone uses Twitter, but maybe it'll make it easier to explain to your dad.

Another First in the UK

The UK has had an outsized cultural impact on the world. From music to sports to literature... and now – MMS with Twitter.

Today, not only has Orange UK turned on Twitter SMS, but it has added a first-of-its-kind special enhancement. Orange UK users can also send picture messages (MMS) to 86444 in addition to text messages because of a site that Orange UK has created calledSnapshot. The best part is that it is incredibly simple to use:

  1. Take a photo on your Orange mobile phone
  2. Select 'Send via MMS' or 'Send multimedia message'
  3. Send it to 86444

Twitter does not charge for this service. It's just like sending and receiving messages with your friends — your carrier's standard messaging rates apply. Give it a try by sending a text message to 86444 with the word "START." This means that with the same shortcode, 86444, UK users can tweet via SMS with Vodafone, O2, and now Orange.

The Perfect Combination

As our platform team works with more and more developers to expand access to information, users are able to tweet and read tweets in expanding ways across the web. Today, LinkedIn launched a smart integration that lets you sync up your account with Twitter to allow for an easy flow of information to take place between your networks.

You’ll be able to set your professional status and display more fresh content on your LinkedIn profile via Twitter. And, showing your stream in places off of Twitter.com will connect you to even more people. Shared interest in tips, news, leaders and perspectives can thrust conversations into virtual brainstorms and even business opportunities.

The peanut butter and the chocolate have come together to make the perfect combination. Enjoy!

SMS for AXIS Indonesia

As director of mobile products and partnerships at Twitter, one thing that always makes me smile is the growing demand for sending and receiving tweets via SMS. The ease of composing a text message combined with the "interruptiveness" of getting an alert for an account you follow is a powerful combination. This has always been the aspect of Twitter that excites me most. It's cool to think that a café in Jakarta can write their Twitter username on a chalkboard and tell people to text "follow username" to our shortcode for alerts about the daily special.

Today we are are announcing a partnership with AXIS (@axisgsm) in Indonesia to offer tweets via SMS on the shortcode 89887 (TWTTR). So if you live in Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Medan, Semarang, or anywhere in between, send "START" to 89887 to activate your phone. To learn about all the useful commands we support via SMS click here.

If your country isn't supported with Twitter SMS, we're working with lots of folks around the globe and it's possible that your network will be up and running soon.

Retweet Limited Rollout

We've just activated a feature called retweet on a very small percentage of accounts in order to see how it works in the wild. Retweet is a button that makes forwarding a particularly interesting tweet to all your followers very easy. In turn, we hope interesting, newsworthy, or even just plain funny information will spread quickly through the network making its way efficiently to the people who want or need to know.

You may remember that we shared the mechanics of this feature with developers a while back so they could think about how to work it into Twitter apps. Now we're ready to start trying it on Twitter. The plan is to see how it goes first with this small release. If it needs more work, then we'll know right away. If things look good, we'll proceed with releasing the feature in stages eventually arriving at 100%.

Get to the Point: Twitter Trends

As Twitter grows and the number of tweets each day continues to astound us, we’ve noticed an increasing amount of clutter in the public timeline, especially with trending topics. Trends began as a useful way to find out what’s going on but has grown less interesting due to the noisiness of the conversation.

So, today we're starting to experiment with improvements to trends that will help you find more relevant tweets. Specifically, we're working to show higher quality results for trend queries by returning tweets that are more useful. The improvement won't be very noticeable at first, but this is a small step toward unearthing more value in search and getting you more relevant results.

¡Bienvenidos!

There's a List for That

We’re putting the finishing touches on our new Lists feature and we're really excited about the folks who have already taken a lot of time creating awesome lists. From the @time list of funny people to your own list of people who make you laugh—it's easy to see how this feature increases discovery and adds value in lots of ways.

Lists also make it easier to curate tweets into meaningful real-time experiences on your own sites via the Lists API. Media companies are already taking advantage: for example, check out @huffingtonpost's use of the Lists API in their World Series coverage.
@Bettydraper/rolodex: A collection of fan-created Mad Men characters
@NYTimes/staff: The colorful people behind The Gray Lady
@BBC/radio1-1xtra: Turns out BBC radio hosts are a chatty bunch
@Joesebok/poker: A list of professional poker players by a professional poker player
@jayrosen/mindcasters: A list of the some of the best new media thinkers by an NYU professor
@Stocktwits/suggested: A list of traders for stock market fanatics
We’ve been taking our time rolling out the lists feature to make sure things go smoothly and developers have a chance to begin experimenting with our Lists API. For example, TLISTS will provide tools to efficiently build, measure and distribute Lists, while Listorioushosts a directory of 'awesome lists' on Twitter.

Anyone can curate and publish lists, so if you have an idea for one, just click "New list" in the sidebar of your Twitter account and you're on your way. Add accounts to a list using the "Lists" drop drown on a profile page. We believe Lists will be a new discovery mechanism for great tweets and accounts.

Followers Being Organized By Tweetpler

Since the launch of the most popular micro-blogging platform on the Web, Twitter has attracted many developers to create hundreds of Twitter apps. Most Twitter users use the platform to promote a product/software, using it as a fan club for celebrities and sharing one's daily life with others on the Twitterverse.
Some useful apps I'm using include Tweetlater (schedule Tweets and automated welcoming direct messages), Twhirl (a Twitter desktop client) and Twitterholic (checking the ranks and information of Twitterers). Today, I'm going to share with you another app called Tweepler. Just likeFriendOrFollow, it helps you organize your Twitter followers with ease by showing you detailed information such as Avg Tweets, Total Tweets, Number of Followers, Number Following and the Followers to Following Ratio. Basically, the main objective of this app is to let you follow those that you don't follow back. It's the common mindset that when most Twitterers follow others, they would of course want to be followed too. As the founder explains on the site, "We know people love Twitter, they love to follow and be followed - but the process of actually sorting these new followers becomes a job in itself. Tweepler fixes this issue by providing a much more simplistic and enjoyable "befriending" experience." Just like some other Twitter apps, it requires you to enter your Twitter credentials before you can start organizing. Since I've over 12,000 followers and following 11,000+ people, it took me quite a while to import and load the data. Therefore, if you've tons of followers or friends, you got to be patient with the new service. Once the data is presented to you, you can start classifying your followers in three different buckets: “Follow”, “Ignore” and "Unprocessed Followers". Tweepler is indeed a much needed and more intuitive way of organizing your Twitter account. It's created by Cory Schop (a social media enthusiast, serial web entrepreneur) and Jessy Ouellette (a fulltime consultant).

TweetEffect Will Tell You When You Lost Or Gained A Follower In Twitter

Have you ever wonder which kind of tweets would interest your followers and also boost your follower count? Or sometimes you feel disappointed when you've lost several followers because of a particular tweet but don't know which one is it? This is when an impressive Web app called TweetEffect comes in handy.
Unlike other Twitter apps, TweetEffect doesn't requires you to enter your Twitter credentials which also means that you can check your friends' account too. With this useful indicator, it allows Twitterers to easily view and observe which of their tweets has been translated to an increase or decrease in followers. Hence, you can have a rough estimation of what the people on Twitterverse wants to read. It even provides a graph that shows you the frequency of follower changes and a list of last 200 updates, one by one.
Of course, you can't rely fully on TweetEffect as the results aren't 100 per cent accurate as there are more factors that make people come or go but at least you can play with it if you've some time to spare. By the way, I would say it's really interesting!

TwiHotels Lets You Tweet Your Hotel Requirements on Twitter

let's say you’ve planned a romantic holiday to Paris, France with your spouse, and would like to select the most suitable hotel in terms of location, price, and accommodation. The traditional way people search for hotels is to head to online hotel finders to find out more about the facilities, photos, location and even reviews posted by other users before making a right decision. However, there are several downsides such as requiring a lot of searching and cross-referencing in order to select a good hotel at a reasonable rate. This is when the power of social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter comes in really handy. Launched a few days, Twihotels is a fun, easy-to-use, simple and useful application which enables Twitterers to tweet their hotel requirements on their Twitter profile. Their followers will then respond by providing him/her with their expert advice on the best form of accommodation based on their experience of a particular city. It works quite similar to any other hotel finders on the web and the only difference is that it makes use of a different approach to garner genuine and useful firsthand experiences and thoughts. twihotels To start, simply select your destination, hotel category, check-in and check-out dates, number of rooms, adults and children. After which, your hotel query will be posted on your Twitter profile and there is a possibility that users could be directly approached by hotels, apartments and lodges, which means more options to choose from. Of course, when you’ve a large number of followers, there is a higher chance for receive valuable feedbacks and advice from your friends or followers. On the site, there’s an advanced search feature which allows you to search for tweets regarding a particular location. However, it only displays the tweets posted by users on TwiHotels earlier on instead of having a threaded conversation feature to show who have responded to that tweet. Due to Twitter’s 140 characters limit, the description of the hotel requirement of most tweets aren’t shown fully, which means that the number of adults and children are often missed out. Overall, TwiHotels is indeed a simple but unique creation that will benefit many people – using it as a social tool to find the most suitable hotels or apartments for honeymoons, business trips, etc.

Get Twitter Search Alerts via Email with Twilert

twilert
From the word "Twitlert", you would know that this got to do something with Twitter, a microblogging platform. Well, Twilert is an impressive Twitter application start-up which sends you Twitter search updates containing any keywords you want via email.
Created by Dan Leach, this new service benefits Twitterers who want to keep updated to the latest buzz on the Twitterverse and those who want to follow or socialize with other users of a particular niche. To create a "Twilert", you will have to sign up for an account. In your dashboard, type in your keywords in the textfield and choose how often you would like to receive updates (daily, weekly or monthly). Hit enter or click on "Create a Twilet" and wait for updates to appear in your email account. Under the "Advanced settings", you can filter out irrelevant tweets by keywords, author, recipient, location, link-location, and attitude (positive, negative or neutral). Twilert is especially useful as you need not to keep refreshing the Twitter search page every minute to track conversation and opinion on a brand, company or product on Twitter. twilert3

Get Notified Via Email When Someone Post A Reply To You On Twitter?

Besides checking your Twitter profile frequently for new replies, you can now receive notifications right in your inbox, browser or RSS with TweetReplies. Without the need to provide your Twitter password, you can also read replies of your favorite Twitterers instead of just your own.
Using the Twitter API, the simple but clever Web app automatically forwards the replies directly to any email account you've chosen earlier on whenever someone posted a @reply to you. To make an RSS feed of your replies, simply enter your Twitter ID and you can then save it in your bookmarks or in any RSS feed readers. Actually, I feel that Twitter should include this useful feature into the list of the new followers and direct messages email notifications. Maybe I'll suggest this to the folks at Twitter and see how they response to it.
